The Bread Wife, Part 1

This is an experiment.

I’ve been scribbling and doodling a short story in my notebook lately, based on an idea that’s been kicking around upstairs for over a year now. It’s called “The Bread Wife” and I’m going to post it here on the blog in four parts.

I’m not sure if this is the best way to present a story like this. It might be obnoxious to read a story this length broken into little four or five page snippets. Or maybe it’ll work great. I guess we’re going to find out. Feel free to post feedback in the comments.

Now I could ramble on about how this story probably needs more editing that I had time to give it, or about how I’m not sure if I should be drawing the characters or leaving them up to your imaginations (I finally chose to draw them), but instead let’s just jump right in.

Here’s part 1 of The Bread Wife:

What's the worst that could happen? (I can't wait to find out.)

Can't wait for the next installment! I think it's fabulous so far; you have a real talent for writing as well as illustrating.

A great setup! About breaking it up like this, I think it works fine.

Fun story! Can't wait for the rest. Can I just say, that I love your picture of the baker. I don't know what it is about him, but I really like the tough guy baker, not a round, roly poly baker guy, you know?

Part Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, part Pygmalion so far... and all good. It needs a bit of Marvel magic woven in... I definitely think the Bread Wife needs superpowers. Work a radioactive insect, an alien with an ancient legacy, a supervillian bent on the destruction of humanity, a spunky sidekick, a gruff but secretly sympathetic old crimefighting mentor and a government conspiracy into the dough and you could be looking at (another) NYT bestseller.

***SPOILER ALERT***
The Miller actually IS the supervillian! He's tricking the Baker into making a Doomsday Golem. However, Fate will intervene and the Baker won't follow the instructions EXACTLY, so the Bread Wife will not turn out Evil. But she'll be incredibly powerful, and will have to be taught right from wrong. Then she and the Baker will team up to save the village (and world) from the Baker and his legions of Bread Dragons. Also, an alien gets involved, the government proves ineffective in assisting the situation.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT????

*cough*

I'm not at all impatient, as you can tell.

Love it!! Doyle also published his stories in serial form in The Strand, didn't he? You're in great company! ;)

Oh dear. Noah, I have a terrible feeling that this story is going to be a big disappointment for you.

Arrrggggghhhhh! What happens next? I hope it turns out better than "The Crane WIfe", "The Story of the Selkie" or "The Gingerbread Man". Those stories all seem to imply that it is a bad thing to create a wife by magical means. (On the other hand, it worked for me). :)

I'm in(terested)! You said you're putting up the next installment in, like, two hours, right?

I'm shooting for Monday. Hopefully you'll have such a fun weekend that it will SEEM like two hours!

My plan is monday, wednesday and the last part on friday next. The story's all done but I'm doing most of the illustrations as I go.

I think it works great with the illustrations interspersed. I'm always a fan of new fairy tales!

Do you think the woman who gave birth to you 36 years ago could have an advanced copy? I can't wait til next Friday to find out what happens!!😍

Wonderful story! It's perfect with the drawings of the characters, the mill, and the bread sculptures. The pictures only fuel our imaginations more as you weave the story. Spot on.

Also, the baker has the perfect Studio Ghibili style beard. Nice touch.

Very excited to read the rest!

Can't wait to find out what happens next. Does he succeed in making a wife out of bread? Does she come alive or is she just bread?
