Family Drawing Time (and More Travel)

Last Sunday the Little Hatke Family found itself gathered around the table and we all started drawing our own versions of Superman. It was a lot of fun and we’re thinking of making a regular thing out of picking and redesigning different characters as a family activity. I especially love tweaking superhero costumes (one of my favorite websites is Project Rooftop). Here’s my Supes:

And here’s a quick sketch I did of Lois Lane:

And here is Angelica’s very cheerful Superman:

The other girls pictures seem to have disappeared back into the whirlwind. There are times when we are just swimming in drawings in this house... But here are a couple more from Angelica, more her regular fare:

Finally, some upcoming travels and appearances:

This Saturday, November 10th, I will be signing at Big Planet Comics in Vienna, VA, from 11am to 1pm and at Big Planet Comics in College Park, MD from 3 to 5pm.

And next week, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, I’ll be at the Miami Book Fair. I’m not sure of my exact schedule yet. Anyone out there from Miami?

It is SO NICE to see Happy Superman. If you look at the toys he always looks so *angry*, like you just kicked Krypto in the head. I like the Superman who enjoys life, kicks back in the sun, has a kind word for a stranger, and enjoys his Mom's apple pie. The kind of Superman who'd think Zita was a pretty awesome kid. ^_^ These pics are of THAT Superman, and thank you for them. ^_^

Yes YES! Thank you David. I've spent a lot of time though the years thinking about Superman. Of all the major heroes Superman is the one who should look the most comfortable in his own skin. There's no need for a dark "gritty" or angry Superman! If he has an emotional conflict I think it's best if it's something like loneliness or the haplessness and slight overwhelmed-ness of being a country mouse in the Big City.

I like the boxers-instead-of-briefs look on the outside of the tights.

Also agree with the happy faces. My three-year-old deduces that all cartoon characters with 'angry eyes' must be bad guys. and by golly if there isn't some kind of logic there.

Angelica's getting pretty good! I love the chicken(s) and cat(s)!

Ha! Jill I know that you know all too well how much time I spend thinking about superhero costumes.

With the "boxers" I was thinking of trying nod back to the old circus strong man/1800's pro wrestler type outfits that helped inspire the first superhero looks.

I have nothing to back this up, but I imagine that in the days before lycra a pair of boxer-type shorts over very fitting pants would allow you to squat and jump and do feats of strength without the fear of splitting your pants.

Or, well, if you split them no one would be able to tell...

I have another brief-less design I'm working on as a public service. The current superman costume in the comics has no shorts outside the pants, but it look atrocious.

Also, SHORT CAPE! Batman needs a long, dramatic, flowing cape. More like a cloak of shadow.

I think supes looks good with a shorter cape. It's a more athletic look. Like an added flourish.

We always enjoy the peeks at your children's artwork! Very cool. Josiah says someone should write a research paper on resemblances in family members' artwork. It's quite a curious phenomenon to observe in artists as well in my own household. Angelica's dragon is so Hatke!
Anyways, I can just picture you guys having a blast sitting around drawing together. Perhaps your girls might like to join the All Saints ATC swap we're hosting. It's for all ages!
