The Great Zita the Spacegirl Jolly Giveaway Contest!

Hello Internet! My chilly little studio office looks like the exploded innards of a UPS truck -all packing tape, manilla envelopes and cardboard boxes. Many of you should have received your books by now. This little project was a good experience for me. I learned things. Things like “brownies and milk aren’t so great after licking a dozen manilla envelopes.”

But if you read the title of this post then you aren’t here to listen to me yammer on about licking envelopes! You want to know about the CONTEST. Here’s how it works:

The winner will receive a signed hardcover copy of Zita the Spacegirl along with a little tiny original watercolor tucked in side the front cover:

To Enter all you have to do is leave a comment in this post! Simple, right?

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL...

Do you want to increase your odds of winning? Then help me spread the word about Zita the Spacegirl! Posting about the comics somewhere, mentioning zitaspacegirl.com on twitter or facebook or another blog -that is worth TWO extra entries (three is the maximum). Of course you do run the risk of bringing more people into the contest ...but therein lies the fun!

The contest will close ONE WEEK FROM TODAY and entries will be put into a randomizer. I’ll then post the name of the winner who will have 48 hours to send me his or her address. I’ll do my level best to get the prize out for Christmas.

Okay.... GO!!

EDIT
: Contest Update: Guess what finally arrived today? My paperback comp copies! So folks, we now have a SECOND PRIZE -namely a paperback copy of Zita the Spacegirl that comes with a tiny little piece of concept art. Take a look:

PS: this is an super-good animated short via Lines and Colors. Definitely worth watching!

I would love to win a copy!! And if I don't, I'll be buying one, because not only will I love the book, but I know my daughters will too. :)

I saw that short on Kyle Kenworthy's animation blog the other day. So Awesome, melancholy and sweet.

I'd love to win, too!

OK, I'm in. Plus, I've got to post this on FB, because, frankly, Ben, your stuff needs to be seen by more folks....

Benn said...

Hopefully I'll win because then you'll have the opportunity of sending a package to a Ben Hatke that lives in another state!

And I'll still buy a book if I don't win, how else could I steal all your credit?

Love Zita the Space Girl, count me in!

Just opened the package last night. My wife was enamored of the little floaty creature that was included. I loved the superhero sketch on the inside and was laughing at the parts I hadn't seen before and also at some I had. It is a great looking little treasure.

So does my comment on GeekDad count as an entry? http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2010/12/where-are-the-stories-for-girls/

I'll still twitter and fb about Zita even if it counts.

Fr Matthew said...

Looks very well done! If I win, I'll probably give it to my brother, who collects this kind of thing. After I read it, of course...

Cory said...

Yes! Love the space girl!

E said...

I want in too! :) Thanks to your sister for posting to FB for the tip!

Karen said...

How fun and exciting! Looks great! My kids would love it. We already have angel in the waters!

Cor Mariae said...

so does one need to comment twice for two entries and three times for three entries? or only once mentioning how many entries they should get? =/

Ben Hatke said...

What??!? Aack! Don't make it complicated! If you comment your name has entered the hat. If you post about the book somewhere your name goes in the hat two more times.

If you comment more than once nothing happens (as far as the hat is concerned).

And TIM! Your GeekDad post certainly counts. You've done more than your duty!

(PS: I'm secretly hoping to get 100 entries).

Ben Hatke said...

And My comments don't count! I am not eligible to win this grand sweepstakes.

Cor Mariae said...

*shrugs* well that's just how I've seen it done other places and since you didn't mention it I was wondering.... ;)

I posted about it on my blog and face-book. =)

A copy of your book would be wonderful to have- and I'd absolutely cherish a little piece of your original art!! That little Zita is just so cute- I'll bet she's just as great a character as my current favorite of yours, (little Pirate Natty, if I have her name right) from The Plank.

I've linked to this blog on my Facebook- I'd love to have more of my friends know about you!

Ben Hatke said...

I can't believe you remember Nattie the Scourge. I was thinking of trying another Nattie story after all this time...

Thanks C!

I got here because of Jef Murray and FB. So his posting works. I'd love to win a copy if only because the drawing reminds me of my daughter: cheeky, with a tell-me-what-you-want-but-I-will-still-do-whatever-I-please grin. Btw, use a damp sponge next time for the envelopes; so you can enjoy your milk & cookies ;o)

Ben,

A few thoughts.....

1.) I want to win a free book. I already pre-ordered it on Amazon, so if I don't win I guess I'm still set. But, really, I want to win. Which makes me think to myself, complainingly, that you are discriminating against me and my anti-technology mindset. I'm not on facebook, I don't tweet, I don't blog, and I don't even have any friends that I can use for more chances to win. WAIT!! Katie is on facebook. Maybe I'll highjack her account and link to your post. That is if I can figure out how........

2.) I got your package and had to fight Thomas off for first dibs. 'Twas wonderful. He is going to take the Family Adventure book and Zita to school when it comes for show-and-tell. He said he's going to tell the class that he knows a famous author and wondered if they would believe him.

3.) Dude, you should totally give things away more. The lurkers really come out of the woodwork, huh?

4.) Are you guys coming home for Christmas?

Miss you,
M.

Ben Hatke said...

Re: #3: I KNOW! Half the reason I'm doing this is because I'm so curious about who is reading!

HA!!! I TOTALLY DID IT!!!! I SNUCK INTO KATIE'S FACEBOOK PAGE AND LINKED TO YOUR BLOG. THAT MEANS I GET TWO CHANCES TO WIN, RIGHT? OR, DOES IT MEAN THAT I JUST GAVE KATIE A CHANCE? AH, HECK..... I PROBABLY JUST GAVE MYSELF COMPETITION!!!!!

M.
FACEBOOK WIZARD
BUT NOT REALLY, BECAUSE KATE JUST LEFT HERSELF LOGGED IN ON MY COMPUTER.

So i'm the 51st... oh well. ;)

molokoman said...

Looks really nice, I'm in :-)

Skye said...

Thank you for the welcome, Ben! And seeing how you're curious as to what type of people come and read this, let me tell you that I, for one, am the bold and forward type. So ... if I win a signed copy for my daughter Sam, I'll translate your Spacegirl for free into Dutch, if that hasn't happened already and you find a willing publisher. How's that for being forward? *grin* And yes, I AM a translator.

Christina said...

Why does everyone have to love Zita the Spacegirl as much as I do and want to enter? Bah. I'm buying it even if I don't win!

(And don't think that gives you license to purposely not pick me because I'd buy it anyhow! ;) )

Ben Hatke said...

Dutch?!? Seriously?? Wow.

Christina! Don't worry. I will use the power of RANDOMNESS

http://www.random.org

to pick a winner.

I wrote to The Catholics Next Door (the Willits on the Catholic Channel) and told them that they should interview you. They love graphic adventure books. Does that get me a couple of chance to win?

Florence and Joshua love to look at your blog for any new things by Mr. Hatke- aka Angelica's dad. If we don't win I'll be buying them a copy.

Just discovered Zita today thanks to a link on another blog...she looks likes my kinda kid.

wheelercreek said...

This looks great! I know my little girl would love it.. and we would have fun reading it together!

Ben Hatke said...

Hey Up over 60 comments! Awesome!

Skye said...

One more comment then ... Dutch is actually spoken by some 27 million people. I could've offered to translate it into Frisan (or Frysk) but I'm afraid that wouldn't pay off. Hope the random winner picker method will randomly pick me ;o)

Ryn said...

My siblings would love a copy of this book! Thank you so much for having this contest!

Ralph you are totally disqualified.

Of course I remember her- Nattie the Scourge was my first introduction to your work, in that volume of Flight! Cute, feisty, tough, with pigtails flying in the wind; I believe she's my favorite drawn character ever! I liked her so much a friend surprised me by making me a shirt with her on it.

As if seeing new work of yours doesn't already make me giddy enough, I think I would literally jump for joy upon seeing new work featuring Nattie!

Cheers!

I am ignorant of Nattie the Scourge. If someone were looking for specific editions of Flight (or anything else) that your previous work was in, where would one find that information?

C Jeske said...

@Tim - Volume 2 of Flight had the story The Plank with the character Nattie. According to Wikipedia he had another story in volume 3, as well as a Zita The Space Girl story in something called Explorer Volume One.
