Sketches, Scratches and Wisdom

I sometimes make a lot of sketches and doodles when I'm trying to plot out an illustration. Once in a while I end up with a doodle that I am really pleased with. This quick little gestural sketch of Angelica is one of those:



And here's another picture from the Bethlehem Books series. Apparently, there's a legend that the painting known as The Black Madonna of Czestochowa was painted by St. Luke the Evangelist:



I guess in this illustration St. Luke is still thinking about how to get started on the painting...
